Dark Secrets is the first book in a series based on the life of a farm girl born in 1908 when the United States was becoming a world leader, and farm families made up over half of the population. Conditions for the Negro had worsened, women rallied for the right to vote, and social change in music, dance, and fashion filtered into rural areas. This book shows prejudice faced by Negroes, Gypsies, Jews, and women of that era.
The book begins with Ollie trying to get home after receiving a head injury in an attack by two boys—the same boys that she thinks raped her friend and murdered a girl in a nearby community. She remains in a coma for five days, recalling vivid events of her first fifteen years.
Ollie is competitive and contends with schoolmates, and her older brother and sister, but is eager to help with younger siblings. With a gift for premonition and healing, her ambition is to be a nurse, but when her papa has to pay a promissory note signed for a friend, he cannot afford to send her away to school. With no money for schooling, she worries about becoming a spinster. Still, she rejects all the young men—until she meets Roy.

In late elementary school and junior high, I devoured historical fiction and the classics, and still go through phases where I want to read about what happened "in the olden days".DARK SECRETS reminds me of stories my grandparents told of growing up in the Ozarks, and -- had it been around when I was in sixth or seventh grade -- would have been one of my favorite books, I suspect.
Written in present tense, it has a "here and now" feel that helps the reader enter the story's setting and time period. (For readers who prefer their stories only in past tense, give this one a chance. The present tense soon fades into the background, becoming unnoticeable as the story progresses.)
There isn't a lot of flowery poetic language, or attempts to be "important" or "literary", and yet the writing does tend toward a terse, straight-forward poetry and literary cadence.
Darker aspects of the story are handled discreetly while not glossing over the fact that bad things happen. Meantime, a lot of good happens, too, as Ollie grows up, dreams, and eventually meets the young man who will change the course of her life. (Their story continues in the next book.)
Recommended for all ages.

Very interesting facts regarding family. Learned a lot and really enjoyed the book. Looking forward to the next one. Just have one question on why one uncle was left out of the book.
I really enjoyed reading this book, Dark Secrets, could hardly put it down. It was exciting to read about the way of life in the 1900s. I can't wait to read the next two books of the series.
This book is based on a true life story with some fiction for added interest. It is a God honoring book in a subtle kind of way. Easy reading, interesting and authentic for the period (1920's).
I found the book Dark Secrets by Nancy Powell to be entertaining and informative of the way of life in the early 1900's. I would recommend it to young and older people alike.
This was a very good book i enjoyed reading it i couldn,t hardly put it down I thought it was very well written cant wait for the next two books. I have a connrction with the people in the book so it made it even better
But I am also family so the story line is something I am very interested in. I enjoyed reading history of my husband's family and learning about their trials and tribulations.
