George Alec Effinger created something marvelously endearing in Maureen "Don't call me Muffy" Birnbaum. One one hand an ardent feminist warrior woman who remains an ageless seventeen in her gold bra, G-string and accompanying broadsword, on the other hand, a spoiled Jewish American Princess who loves to shop. Effinger skillfully marries the disparate parts of Maureen's psyche to create lighthearted comic gold. Each story is framed and related by Marueen's good friend Betsy, whose fortunes rise and fall with each unwelcome reappearance of her schoolmate. Maureen began her adventures on Mars as a distaff version of John Carter. Having a poor sense of direction, our comely heroine fails in every subsequent attempt to return to the red planet. She ends up in Pellucidar, a horse clan post-apocalyptic earth, Seeks the Holy Grail, changes the fate of Asimov's "Nightfall," tries to out shop Maid Marian in Merri Olde England and battles Cthulhu. Rounding things out is a short piece posted in a SF fan program. Quite fun as that rare phenomenon the successful SF comedy. If you love heroic fantasy, adventure, or strong independent women, you will find much to enjoy in this book

I'd been looking for a copy of this for ages and when I saw it at Worldcon, boy howdy did I grab it up. You see, I'd read the first two stories in this little collection and wanted to read the rest very badly.

Ahem. Let me start again.

This is a silly book. A very, very silly book.

It begins when a preppie girl named Muffy Birnbaum (from the Greenberg School, no less) winds up on Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars, or Barsoom. Over the course of nine stories, Muffy -- pardon me, Maureen -- visits a variety of worlds ERB's Pellucidar, the future of Robert Adams's Horseclans stories, Asimov's Lagash (from "Nightfall"), Sherwood Forest, somewhere on the outskirts of Arthurian Britain, Lovecraft's version of Yale, and a near future Moon.

Did I mention it was silly? Because it is.

Oddly for something as silly as this, Maureen also develops as a woman and a heroine, from the airheaded preppie of the first story to a self-empowered feminist with a knack for helping those in need.

And it's very very silly.
Slightly dated, of course, but there you go. I only discovered these stories recently. I'd quite like to know if there are any more out there, so I'm looking.
I think these stories would probably have worked better as they were originally presented; one at a time over a few years. If you were a reader of Edgar Rice Burroughs (Barsoom Series), Robert E. Howard (Conan), Edgar Rice Burroughs (Pellucidar Series) and others, then you know all the tropes and it is fun to see them Prepified.
Whooshing between milieus, Maureen (don't call her Muffy!) visits Mars, the center of the Earth, the Horseclans, Asimov's Nightfall observatory, Merrye Olde Englande and more. Trusty sword, gold plated bra and not much else. (You'd think she'd get cold!) Silly as all heck, and a fun read.
If you like science fiction and haven't discovered Maureen Birnbaum, you're really in for a treat with this book!

She's an empty headed valley girl who stumbles into great science fiction in the real world, and is completely lost! It makes for hilarious reading in a series of short stories that sends up all the classic science fiction and more.

The first story sends Maureen, or Muffy, as she's known to her friends on a trip to Mars in a parody of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars books, where she acquires her sword, "Old Betsy."

In later stories, she continues her adventures in the center of the Earth and more.

I'm sure that when this book was published, it was the complete collection, but more have been written and published since then. Keep your eye out for anthologies of humorous science fiction, and you're sure to find more stories.

But you won't find more of them in any one single place than this book.
