The Saint A Highland Guard Novel Monica McCarty 9780345528407 Books Reviews

Magnus and his childhood sweetheart, Helen, were parted by clan feud, pride and misunderstanding, only to see her years later betrothed to his best friend. But, tragedy brought them together again, and Magnus, so overshadowed by the past, struggled to fulfill the promise he made to his friend. It was really hard to like Magnus here. I don't know how Helen put up with him or continued in her optimism, but it is clear she is the one deserving of the title, The Saint, not Magnus. Magnus was cold, stubborn, bitter and unforgiving the whole way, and it wasn't until the end when he actually started to fight for Helen that I started to like him a bit. Helen's naive optimism and self-sacrificing determination to win Magnus back was pathetic and demeaning at times, though she had moments of great strength as well and in that she really shined. There was a second story line between Helen's brother, Will, and the healer, Muriel, and though I found it interesting and in many ways paralleled Helen's story, I found it for the most part depressing. And poor William Gordon (Templar), he sure got the short end of the stick here, and I felt sad for him as well. However, I liked the idea of a female medic joining the men in battle/missions, and thought Helen's skills and presence of mind in protecting and caring for the King in the midst of battle, brought an interesting new element to the fighting, that I really liked. The next book in this series is The Recruit, about Helen's brother, Kenneth.
It's always a delight to read one of McCarty's stories. This book is a masterful mix of emotions and wonderful historical details. THE SAINT was an enjoyable read for me. I couldn't hardly put it down. Ms. McCarty captures the spirit of the time.

Magnus McKay is one yummy hero to read about. He's everything I love about heroes- tall, dark, and handsome. He's part of the Bruce's secret Highland Guard. Yeah, he makes my pulse stutter. ;)

Helen is a wonderful and endearing heroine. I loved her! She's a redhead, smart, courageous, and determined. Everything that the "Saint" loves.

It's such a sweet and tender romance between the two characters and so vibrant that they seem to leap off the pages. This story will absolutely captivate you. Highly recommended for its exceptional storytelling and its unforgettable characters.

I cannot wait to start the next in the series!
Historic romances about the Scots, and particularly Highlanders, are at the top of my favorites list. And Monica McCarty never disappoints. The characters in “The Saint A Highland Guard Novel” came alive for me. Magnus McKay, aka the Saint and member of the secret Highland Guard, the strong-willed healer and McKay’s love interest, Helen Sutherland, and of course, Scotland’s king, Robert Bruce (the Bruce). The plot is drawn from history so even if its not all factual, it’s certainly plausible, and definitely intriguing, especially the battle scenes. I would’ve appreciated either an index of some of the Gaelic terms and phrases or a footnote. I think it’s interesting that most of the ones I looked up were listed as Irish-Gaelic and not Scots-Gaelic. Hmmm. And as good a storyteller as Ms McCarty is, she shouldn’t have to stoop to using one of the most trite phases ever; “with every fiber of her being” not just once, but four times in the same book??? Still, even with that rant, I enjoyed the story and recommend it to those who love to read about the Scottish Highlands.
The Saint had all the bones for a great story, but Magus MacKay the Highland Guard and hero of the story danced around his attraction an his passionate love for Helen Sutherland. While guarding Robert The Bruce during his progress around Scotland Magus. is invited to his best friends wedding William Gordon. William is his HG partner. Well his best friend is marrying Magus's one and only love of his life Helen. I Liked Helens character a lot she is smart and witty and sometimes funny, but 3 years ago she rejected Magus's proposal of marriage. Not because she didn't love him but because her family hated him and all the MacKay clan. Magus is shocked to find out at the wedding that it is Helen who is to be his best friends wife. Helen tries to talk to Magus but he refuses to listen to what she has to say. So the marriage takes place but not before William realizes that his new bride is in love with his best friend. So he gives her a choice and before she can tell William she wants there marriage annulled he leaves on a mission with the other Highland Guard were he is killed. I just didn't like this plot line at all. Now Magus feels even more guilty and refuses to have anything to do with Helen but fate keeps them together . It takes way to long for them to get back together, It only happens at the end of the book. This story was more about the battles that the HG fought. it had more battles, running and hiding from the enemy scenes then the other HG stories. I like a lot more romance and love making in my stories and this one was sadly lacking in that department. I did like that Robert Bruce was more of a present character in this story.

The other big problem I had was that one of the characters Muriel who had a very good side story with William the Earl of Sutherland and is Helens oldest brother. Poor Muriel had been brutally ganged raped by 8 English Soldiers when she was very young. It left her baron, It was never explained why she was baron because of the rape. I absolutely hate rape and abuse in any romance story. I think most readers are award that during wars women an children are raped, But I don't want to read about it in my romance stories. I would have liked to have read more hot sexy romance between Magnus and Helen and William a d Muriel. But it wasn't to be. So 3 starts instead of 4 or 5 stars.
